Kidnapping has become a disturbing enterprise in Nigeria, driven largely by the huge ransom payments made by families desperate to save their loved ones. Criminals, with little regard for human life, now see abduction as a shortcut to wealth. They believe it is the fastest route to riches without hard work, ignoring both the consequences of their actions and the moral judgment that awaits every human being.
Many individuals are easily drawn into kidnapping gangs because of greed and desperation. In pursuit of money, they prey on innocent citizens and disrupt the peace of society. These criminals often operate boldly, showing no fear or remorse. Some even collaborate to stage abductions, all in the name of financial gain.
Even more troubling is the cruelty displayed during these crimes. Videos of abductees being tortured are sometimes circulated on social media platforms such as TikTok to pressure families into paying ransom. Victims are forced to plead for money while in captivity, with their freedom tied to the speed of payment.
The most heartbreaking aspect of kidnapping is that many captives are murdered even after ransom has been paid, while others die because their families cannot raise the demanded sums in time. Countless Nigerians have lost loved ones in this manner, leaving families shattered and communities in grief.
Furthermore, the trauma caused by kidnapping has claimed additional lives. Some relatives die from shock, stress, or emotional breakdown while trying to secure the release of abducted family members. Kidnapping has therefore become not only a security crisis but also a humanitarian tragedy.
The persistent rise in abductions has also created widespread fear across the nation. Many Nigerians now hesitate to travel by road, worried that highways have become hunting grounds for kidnappers. Freedom of movement, once taken for granted, is increasingly threatened.
Although some victims regain their freedom through ransom payments, many families are not as fortunate. Some are reunited only with corpses, while others never see their loved ones again. Such brutality reveals the depth of moral decay caused by greed and desperation.
The growing rate of kidnapping in Nigeria is both alarming and heartbreaking. Many young people, driven by the obsession with quick wealth, have embraced crime instead of honest labor. Yet one truth remains certain: wealth, power, and status are temporary. Death is inevitable, and what endures after life is not riches, but legacy.
Nigeria must confront this menace through stronger security measures, justice, youth empowerment, and a renewed commitment to moral values. Only then can society overcome this crisis and restore the dignity of human life.
