The growing wave of insecurity and terrorist infiltration across Yoruba land in Southwestern Nigeria has become a deeply disturbing development that demands urgent and collective action from political leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, and the people themselves.
Recent attacks in parts of Oyo State, particularly in Orire Local Government Area, have left painful scars on affected communities. The gruesome killing of a teacher, the abduction of a school principal, several promising schoolchildren, and some villagers have once again exposed the frightening reality confronting many rural communities across the Southwest.
Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Similar attacks have been recorded in Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun states, while Lagos appears to remain only partially insulated from the growing threat. Increasingly, many observers believe these repeated invasions are no longer mere cases of kidnapping for ransom, but part of a broader and more dangerous agenda aimed at destabilising Yoruba land and forcefully occupying ancestral territories through sustained attacks on vulnerable locations such as farms, schools, and remote settlements.
These developments should serve as a serious wake-up call to Yoruba leaders and stakeholders across the Southwest. The signs are ominous, and the time has come for proactive and coordinated measures to halt the infiltration of terrorists and safeguard Yoruba communities from further bloodshed and displacement.
More troubling, however, are allegations that some local collaborators may be aiding these criminal elements. Security analysts and residents argue that the recent attacks in parts of Oyo State could hardly have occurred without the assistance of informants familiar with the terrain and local movements.
If indeed some Yoruba indigenes are conniving with terrorists for financial gain or personal interests, such actions amount not only to betrayal but to outright complicity in the destruction of their own people. Those who provide information or support to criminal gangs must understand that no amount of money can justify the blood of innocent relatives, neighbours, and fellow kinsmen being shed on Yoruba soil.
The consequences of such betrayal extend beyond immediate tragedy; they threaten the collective security, unity, and future of Yoruba generations yet unborn.
At this critical moment, unity among the Yoruba people has become more important than ever. Governors across the Southwest must strengthen security collaboration and closely monitor the influx of suspicious individuals entering the region under questionable circumstances. Regional cooperation among Southern governors, community leaders, and security agencies is also essential in ensuring that terrorism and organised criminality are decisively confronted and eradicated.
This is not the time for political divisions, ethnic rivalry, or religious sentiments. It is a defining moment for the Yoruba nation to rise above differences and work together in defence of its ancestral heritage, territorial integrity, and the safety of its people.
The survival, peace, and future of Yoruba land depend on the unity, vigilance, and courage displayed today.
