Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, has made history by emerging as the newly elected President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), becoming the first woman to lead the country’s foremost association of legal practitioners.
Mrs Badejo-Okusanya secured 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 per cent of the 26,106 valid votes cast in the keenly contested presidential election conducted through the NBA’s electronic voting platform.
The 24-hour election commenced at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday and ended at 7:34 a.m. on Sunday, with lawyers across the country participating in the exercise.
The final results declared at the end of the poll showed that Badejo-Okusanya outpolled her two challengers to clinch the association’s highest office, underscoring widespread confidence in her leadership credentials and vision for the legal profession.
Her election is widely regarded as a landmark achievement for the NBA and a significant step toward greater gender inclusion in the leadership of professional bodies in Nigeria.
Legal practitioners and stakeholders have described her victory as a defining moment in the history of the association, expressing optimism that her administration will deepen the NBA’s commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence, protection of human rights, and the welfare of lawyers.
Mrs Badejo-Okusanya is expected to assume office at the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing NBA President, ushering in a new era for the association with renewed expectations for reforms, professional excellence, and stronger advocacy on national issues.
