On Monday, July 13, 2026, what began as a routine traffic enforcement exercise along Ikoyi Road, in front of Mercury in Ogbomoso, nearly degenerated into violence before the timely intervention of concerned residents restored calm.

The incident reportedly occurred when officials of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) attempted to apprehend a motorcyclist who allegedly violated traffic regulations by riding against the designated one-way route. The enforcement action sparked outrage among some youths in the area, who accused the officers of unfair treatment and quickly mobilised against them.

The situation escalated as the aggrieved youths hurled insults at the officers and allegedly pelted them with broken bottles and other hard objects. The confrontation drew the attention of motorists, traders and passers-by, while traffic movement in the area was briefly disrupted.

However, the prompt intervention of respected residents and pedestrians, who appealed for calm and urged both parties to avoid further confrontation, prevented what could have resulted in serious injuries and widespread disorder. Acting on the advice of the peace mediators, the OYTMA officers withdrew from the scene, thereby averting a full-scale mob attack.

The incident once again highlights the growing tension between traffic enforcement agencies and some members of the public. While citizens have every right to question the conduct of public officials, resorting to violence, mob action or attacks on law enforcement personnel cannot be justified under any circumstance.

Members of the public, particularly young people, should refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Any grievance against OYTMA officers should be reported through the appropriate complaint channels rather than being expressed through violence or intimidation. Assaulting public officers while they are carrying out their lawful responsibilities is a criminal offence and may attract legal consequences.

At the same time, OYTMA must continue to earn the confidence of the public by demonstrating professionalism, fairness, courtesy and transparency in the discharge of its duties. Officers should avoid acts of bias, nepotism, sentiment or undue familiarity that may undermine public trust or provoke avoidable confrontations.

Traffic management is a shared responsibility. Lasting order and safety on Oyo State roads can only be achieved through cooperation between traffic officials, motorists, commercial riders and the wider community. Dialogue, mutual respect and strict adherence to traffic regulations remain far more effective than violence in resolving disputes and promoting public safety.
