Morocco produced a dominant second-half performance to defeat Canada 3-0 in their Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, booking a place in the quarter-finals in impressive fashion.
The encounter, played at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, began cautiously, with both sides showing tactical discipline and battling for control in midfield.

Canada sought to impose themselves early, while Morocco relied on quick passing and fluid attacking movements to create openings. However, clear-cut chances remained scarce as both teams stayed compact at the back.
Morocco suffered an early setback in the 22nd minute when Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury and replaced by Soufiane Rahimi. Despite the disruption, the North Africans continued to dictate play, with Achraf Hakimi proving influential on the right flank.
The first half was marked by a flurry of bookings. Morocco’s Redouane Halhal, Hakimi, Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss all entered the referee’s book, while Canada’s Richie Laryea and Jonathan David were also cautioned as tensions rose before the break.
Although the opening period ended goalless, Morocco looked the more threatening side, enjoying superior possession and creating the better attacking opportunities.
The breakthrough eventually came five minutes into the second half. Ounahi finished clinically in the 50th minute after a precise assist from Hakimi, handing Morocco a deserved lead and igniting celebrations among their supporters.
The goal boosted Morocco’s confidence as they took complete control of proceedings, denying Canada any meaningful opportunities to mount a response.
Coach Walid Regragui refreshed his midfield in the 63rd minute by introducing Sofyan Amrabat and Chemsdine Talbi, while Canada responded with the introduction of Cyle Larin in a bid to improve their attacking threat.
However, the North Americans struggled to break down Morocco’s organised defence, with frustration becoming evident as Larin received a yellow card in the 67th minute.
Canada made further substitutions late in the game, bringing on Ali Ahmed and Jacob Shaffelburg, but Morocco remained composed and dangerous on the counterattack.
The African side doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute when Ounahi completed his brace. The midfielder calmly converted after being brilliantly set up by Brahim Diaz, capping another outstanding display in the heart of midfield.
Morocco continued to dominate until the closing stages, making additional substitutions while preserving their intensity and defensive solidity.
As Canada pushed forward in search of a consolation goal, Morocco capitalised on the spaces left behind. Deep into stoppage time, Rahimi sealed the emphatic victory, finding the net in the 98th minute after another well-weighted assist from Diaz.
The 3-0 triumph underlined Morocco’s growing confidence, tactical discipline and attacking efficiency as they advanced to the last eight of the tournament.
Ounahi emerged as the star of the match with two goals and an authoritative midfield display, while Diaz provided two assists and Hakimi added another influential performance with an assist of his own.
Canada, meanwhile, bowed out of the competition after failing to cope with the quality, organisation and attacking prowess of the North African side.
