Africa’s leading industrialist and President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, GCON, has pledged ₦600 million towards the construction of a female students’ hostel at Lagos State University (LASU).
Dangote also announced employment opportunities for outstanding graduates of the institution as part of his commitment to supporting education and human capital development.
The commitments were announced during LASU’s convocation ceremonies, where the university conferred on Dangote an Honorary Doctor of Business (Honoris Causa) in Entrepreneurship, Industrial and Human Capital Development.
Represented at the ceremony by his daughter, Hajia Fatima Aliko-Dangote, the industrialist expressed his support for initiatives aimed at improving students’ welfare and creating opportunities for young graduates.
Hajia Fatima disclosed that first-class graduates in Engineering and the Sciences from LASU’s 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic sessions would receive preferential consideration for employment by the Dangote Group after completing their mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
The initiative is expected to provide a direct pathway into one of Africa’s largest industrial conglomerates for some of LASU’s outstanding young engineers and scientists.
The ₦600 million hostel intervention is also expected to support LASU’s efforts to expand accommodation facilities for female students and reduce pressure on existing hostel infrastructure.
The commitments formed part of the major highlights of the convocation ceremonies, which celebrated academic excellence and honoured distinguished personalities for their contributions to entrepreneurship, industry, education and human capital development.
The honorary doctorate awarded to Dangote recognised his contributions to entrepreneurship and industrial development, as well as his efforts towards building human capacity and creating economic opportunities.
With the twin commitments to student accommodation and graduate employment, Dangote’s intervention extended beyond the conferment of the honorary degree, translating the recognition into tangible opportunities and support for LASU students and graduates.
