Over-speeding remains one of the major causes of road accidents in Nigeria. Unfortunately, many motorists, particularly commercial drivers and some private vehicle owners, see excessive speed as a means of demonstrating their driving skills and superiority on the highways. Sadly, many fail to realise that life has no duplicate.

Despite numerous awareness campaigns, road safety seminars, and the installation of billboards, traffic signs, and other cautionary measures by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), reckless driving continues to claim innocent lives across the country. Many motorists still ignore speed limits and other safety regulations, putting themselves and other road users at risk.

The consequences of such negligence extend beyond the drivers alone. Families, friends, and relatives who eagerly await the safe return of their loved ones are often left devastated by tragic news of fatal road accidents caused by avoidable recklessness and disobedience to traffic rules.

The greatest joy of every traveller is to arrive home safely and reunite with family members. However, when lives are cut short on the highways due to dangerous driving, that joy is replaced with sorrow and irreparable loss. The pain and trauma experienced by bereaved families cannot be overstated.

A recent incident in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, highlights the gravity of the situation. On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, a tragic accident reportedly occurred along Old Wazo Market Road. Eyewitness accounts alleged that some speeding drivers, believed to be internet fraudsters, lost control while racing and crashed into a roadside mechanic and his customer, killing them instantly. If investigations confirm these allegations, those responsible must be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. No individual should be allowed to take innocent lives and escape justice.

Consequently, Nigerians, particularly residents of Ogbomoso, must remain vigilant and exercise caution both during the day and at night. Road users should take necessary preventive measures to avoid accidents, while relevant authorities must intensify efforts to monitor and sanction reckless drivers. Protecting innocent lives should remain a collective responsibility.

Ultimately, adherence to traffic regulations, respect for human life, and responsible driving habits are essential to reducing the alarming rate of road accidents in Ogbomoso and Nigeria as a whole.
