Chief Alabi Ogundepo, the distinguished Saki-born poet, writer, cultural enthusiast and respected community figure from Oyo State, has died at the age of 84.
The family announced his passing in a statement issued late Monday night and signed by Dupe Ogundepo Falana.
According to the statement, Chief Ogundepo died on Monday, August 24, 2026, after a lifetime dedicated to literature, culture and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.
“The family of Chief Alabi Ogundepo announces, with deep sorrow and a profound sense of loss, his passing. Chief Alabi Ogundepo departed this life on 24 August 2026 at the age of 84,” the statement said.
A Voice for Yoruba Culture
Chief Alabi Ogundepo was widely respected for his contributions to Yoruba literature and cultural expression. His poetry and writings reflected his profound appreciation of Yoruba language, history, traditions, values and the complexities of the human experience.
Through his creative works, intellectual engagements and public activities, he contributed to the preservation, documentation and promotion of Yoruba cultural heritage.
Beyond his literary accomplishments, the late poet was remembered as a man of dignity, wisdom and compassion. His counsel, friendship and intellectual contributions earned him the respect and affection of people within and beyond his immediate community.
The family described him as a man whose presence commanded respect and whose words often inspired reflection and a deeper appreciation of shared cultural values.
Family Mourns, Celebrates His Legacy
While mourning his death, the family expressed gratitude to individuals, institutions, traditional leaders, members of the literary community, friends and well-wishers who have offered condolences and support.
“While the family mourns the passing of a beloved father, husband, grandfather, relative and friend, we are also comforted by the enduring legacy he leaves behind through his writings, relationships, values and contributions to society,” the statement added.
The family further described his literary legacy as one that would outlive him, noting that his voice, poetry and the memories he created would continue to resonate with generations to come.
“Chief Alabi Ogundepo may have departed this world, but his voice, his poetry and the memories he created will continue to live on,” the family stated.
The family said details of the funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
It also appealed to friends, associates, admirers and members of the public to respect the family’s privacy and remember them in their prayers as they come to terms with the loss.
Chief Alabi Ogundepo’s death marks the end of an era for a generation of Yoruba literary and cultural voices, but his words and cultural contributions remain part of the heritage he spent his life helping to preserve.
