From a Jummat Prayer to a Lasting Legacy: Open Salau’s Quiet Philanthropy in Ilajue
A routine stop for Jummat prayers in Ilajue, Surulere Local Government Area of Ogbomoso Zone, unexpectedly became the beginning of a lasting philanthropic legacy for Engineer Muftau Open Salau, the Deputy Governorship Candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Oyo State.

According to Salau, he was passing through Ilajue when he decided to stop and join members of the community for Jummat prayers. During the visit, he observed the condition of the existing mosque and, rather than merely expressing concern, offered to provide the community with a befitting Central Mosque.
What followed was an uncommon demonstration of commitment to community development. Salau undertook the construction of a new Central Mosque for the people of Ilajue and completed the project within six months in 2016.
The mosque, which has continued to serve as a place of worship and spiritual gathering, stands as one of the visible reminders of Salau’s philanthropic gestures across Ogbomoso and neighbouring communities.
For Salau, however, the project was never about publicity or political recognition. It was, as he has consistently demonstrated through his community interventions, about responding to a need and leaving behind something that would continue to benefit people long after the benefactor had left the scene.
The Ilajue Central Mosque therefore represents more than bricks, mortar and architectural structure. It reflects a philosophy of giving that places community needs above personal publicity—a pattern of what may be described as Salau’s quiet philanthropy.
At a time when many acts of generosity are accompanied by elaborate publicity, the story of the mosque offers a different narrative: that meaningful community service can sometimes begin with a simple observation, a compassionate decision and a commitment to fulfil a promise.
Completed in 2016, the mosque remains a tangible part of Salau’s contribution to the social and spiritual development of Ilajue and surrounding communities, reinforcing his connection with the people and places he has continued to identify with over the years.
