The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country between Sunday and Tuesday, with warnings of possible flooding in some states.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet projected moderate rainfall over parts of Jigawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa during Sunday morning, with thunderstorms and rains expected in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and other northern states later in the day.
The agency warned of a high possibility of flooding in parts of Kebbi, Gombe, and Bauchi. For the central region, light intermittent rains are expected in Plateau, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Niger in the morning, spreading to Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, and Kogi by evening. Flood alerts were also issued for Niger, Plateau, Kogi, and Benue.
In the southern region, cloudy skies will dominate the morning, giving way to moderate rainfall in Enugu, Anambra, Oyo, Osun, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Lagos, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River later in the day. Osun State faces a high risk of flooding.
On Monday, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are anticipated in Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Kaduna. Central states including FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, and Niger will experience light rains in the morning, extending to Plateau and Kwara by evening. The southern region will see cloudy skies in the morning and light rains later in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Lagos.
For Tuesday, NiMet projected morning thunderstorms with moderate rains in Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna. Afternoon thunderstorms are also expected in Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, and Adamawa. Central states, including FCT, Niger, and Plateau, are expected to record afternoon rains, while southern states such as Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Cross River, and Lagos will experience light showers.
The agency cautioned the public against driving under heavy rainfall and urged states with flood alerts to activate emergency response plans. Farmers were advised to avoid applying fertilisers and pesticides before the rains to prevent nutrient leaching.
NiMet further urged residents to ensure warm clothing for vulnerable persons, secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and avoid sheltering under tall trees. Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for flight planning.
