Esther Nworgu has delivered Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after an outstanding performance in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, leading a remarkable one-two finish for Team Nigeria.
The Paralympic silver medallist produced a best lift of 123kg, earning 119 points to clinch the gold medal and hand Nigeria its first title of the Games.
Fellow Nigerian and seasoned para powerlifter, Esther Oyema, claimed the silver medal after recording a best lift of 125kg, finishing with 115.5 points. England’s Olivia Broome settled for the bronze medal with a lift of 119kg, scoring 106.6 points.
Nworgu further underlined her dominance by setting two Commonwealth Games records, cementing her place among the standout athletes of the competition in Glasgow.
The impressive one-two finish once again highlighted Nigeria’s enduring dominance in para powerlifting, a sport that has consistently delivered medals for the country at major international championships.
Nworgu’s composed, technically impressive and commanding display reflected her pedigree as one of the world’s leading para powerlifters, while Oyema added yet another prestigious international medal to her distinguished career, reinforcing Nigeria’s reputation as a global powerhouse in the sport.
