The American Open University Nigeria has unveiled plans to establish a new campus in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, alongside the launch of a tuition-free information technology training programme designed to equip Nigerian youths with in-demand digital skills.

The institution disclosed that the Ogbomoso campus will operate under its hybrid learning model and serve as an extension of its main campus in Ibadan. A facility has already been secured in the Idi-Oro area of the town ahead of the commencement of operations.

According to the university, the initiative is part of broader efforts to position Africa as a global centre for technology talent by preparing young people with practical and future-ready skills.

Central to the project is the “Learn2Earn NG” programme, a tuition-free training scheme focused on full-stack artificial intelligence software engineering. Beneficiaries are expected to receive monthly stipends during the training period, with opportunities for paid employment after completion.

The programme will also connect participants to a global community of learners through collaborative, project-based learning opportunities.

Speaking on the initiative, the promoter, Professor Seyi Akanbi, a Professor of Practice and Artificial Intelligence expert, said the programme is aimed at closing the skills gap among Nigerian youths and improving their competitiveness in the global digital economy.

He added that the university’s academic model combines international standards with practical experience to prepare graduates for real-world challenges.
