Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has explained the reasons behind his alliance with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Monday, Kwankwaso said the North is gradually returning to the political tradition established by Nigeria’s founding leaders, including Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello.

He also recalled that during the Second Republic, former President Shehu Shagari maintained strong political relationships with leaders from the South-East region.
According to the former Kano State governor, the South-East has remained politically friendly with the North and is willing to collaborate for national progress.
Kwankwaso said his decision to align with Obi was based on competence, integrity, and the collective desire to move the country forward.
“From my experience as former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, I had the opportunity to work with my Speaker, and we worked very well,” he said.
“Now, we are returning to what Tafawa Balewa and Ahmadu Bello did during their time, and in the Second Republic, what Shehu Shagari and others did with the leadership of the South-East.
“But for me, it was not just about going to the South-East. Together with our leadership in the North, we looked around to identify someone capable and honest enough to work with us in moving the country forward.
“Along the line, we realised that Peter Obi stands at the forefront, and that is why we all agreed to work together,” Kwankwaso stated.
