Guardians are entrusted with the responsibility of providing parental care, protection, moral guidance, and emotional support to children placed under their care. This responsibility often extends to children whose biological parents are unable to cater for them due to circumstances such as death, financial hardship, or other unavoidable challenges.

Sadly, in some cases, those entrusted with this sacred duty become sources of pain and suffering for the very children they are meant to protect. Minor mistakes or acts of disobedience that require patience, correction, and proper guidance are sometimes met with excessive punishment, physical abuse, and in extreme cases, injuries that threaten the lives of these innocent children. These are children who once enjoyed the love and care of their biological parents but suddenly find themselves exposed to neglect, cruelty, and emotional trauma in the hands of guardians.

Such guardians, though human, sometimes display acts that contradict the compassion and responsibility expected of them. Many children end up under the care of relatives or families because of the difficult circumstances faced by their biological parents, who, if given the opportunity, would gladly continue to provide for and protect their children. No parent willingly gives up the joy of raising their child unless compelled by circumstances beyond their control.

Guardians must therefore understand that caring for a child is not an opportunity for exploitation or abuse but a privilege and a humanitarian responsibility. Children from less privileged backgrounds deserve love, kindness, patience, and protection. They should be treated with the same care and dignity that guardians would give to their own biological children.

Every act of kindness towards a child is meaningful, and every sacrifice made in raising a child is a service to humanity. Guardians should remember that their actions have consequences, and that compassion, fairness, and love attract honour and reward. They must avoid behaviours that they would never tolerate if directed at their own children, bearing in mind that every action has its consequences.

Furthermore, biological parents must remain actively involved in the lives of children placed under the care of others. Regular visits, regardless of distance or challenges, help parents maintain a strong bond with their children and create an avenue for the child to express concerns about their welfare. Consistent communication can help identify cases of maltreatment early and prevent children from suffering silently.

Such visits also allow biological parents and guardians to work together in addressing the child’s behavioural challenges, ensuring that discipline is carried out with wisdom and love rather than cruelty or violence.

The government, on its part, must strengthen child protection mechanisms and ensure that anyone found guilty of abusing or maltreating a child under their care faces appropriate legal consequences. This will serve as a deterrent, prevent future occurrences, and reinforce the message that the safety and dignity of every child must be protected.

Children are the future of every nation. Protecting them from abuse, neglect, and inhumane treatment is not only a moral obligation but a collective responsibility. Nigeria must rise to the occasion by promoting a culture where every child, regardless of circumstance, receives the love, care, and protection they deserve.
