The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned media practitioners and social media users against circulating fake election results or making remarks capable of misleading the public during the ongoing by-elections in Anambra State.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Mr. Godwin Eze, who is overseeing the exercise, issued the warning in Nnewi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, while monitoring the polls.

Eze urged journalists and social media handlers to verify information from credible sources before publication, stressing that the spread of false election results, recycled videos, or inciteful comments could undermine the peaceful conduct of the election.

He also advised the electorate to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid actions that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

“The Nigeria Police Force and sister security agencies are fully committed to providing adequate security for a peaceful, free, and credible election. Anyone caught engaging in misinformation or acts likely to disrupt public peace will face the full weight of the law,” the AIG warned.

Expressing satisfaction with the exercise so far, Eze noted that no major security challenges had been reported in Aguata, Orumba North, Orumba South, Ihiala, Nnewi, and Onitsha, where officers were actively monitoring polling units.

He expressed optimism that the by-election would be hitch-free if all stakeholders continued to uphold peace and order.
