THE POLITICAL tune from Rivers State is not melodious. It is neither comedy nor farce. It is a reflection of how far out political space has been extended beyond comprehensive context. There are mixed feelings: only God can determine how many will be drenched in the unceasing down-pour currently sweeping through Rivers State. Not just the literal rain, but the political storm raging between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged political godfather, Senator Nyesom Wike. This intense power tussle has escalated beyond control, placing the state on a dangerous precipice, like a keg of gunpowder waiting for detonation.
AT THE heart of this crisis lies the betrayal of trust, personal ambition, and shifting allegiances. The dynamics of godfatherism in Nigerian politics are well-known—when a protégé (godson) defies or undermines the authority of his mentor (godfather), especially in matters of loyalty, power, or financial interests, conflict is inevitable. Governor Fubara’s recent moves suggest an attempt to assert independence, a decision that has triggered a fierce backlash from Wike, who, intoxicated by power and federal influence, is determined to maintain control over Rivers State’s political landscape.
IN ADVANCED democracies like the United States and the United Kingdom, where Republicans and Democrats or Conservatives and Labour politicians transition power smoothly, such a scenario would be unimaginable. But in Nigeria, the more one looks, the less one sees. Beneath the surface, there may be undisclosed personal, financial, or family-related conflicts fueling this political enmity.
IN THIS power struggle, no one knows where the tide may turn and Governor Fubara’s prospects are equally at stake. As the duly elected governor, Fubara has the constitutional right to govern without undue external interference. Many Rivers citizens perceive him as a victim of political god-fatherism, rallying behind him in a show of solidarity. His outreach to local leaders and youths has positioned him as a symbol of resistance against political imposition. Allegations of financial mismanagement during Wike’s tenure suggest that Fubara is under pressure to conceal past dealings.
SENATOR Wike’s stronghold which may work in his favour could be traced to the fact that, he was instrumental in Fubara’s emergence as governor, securing party backing and mobilizing support. His tenure as governor saw massive infrastructure projects, and he expected continuity in governance under Fubara. As the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a key ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wike enjoys substantial federal backing. He still wields strong influence over the PDP in Rivers State, with most political structures remaining loyal to him.
The Supreme Court Ruling: A Turning Point or Escalator?
WITHOUT MINCING words, a major legal development has further complicated the situation. The Supreme Court recently voided the defection of 25 pro-Wike lawmakers to the APC, affirming their seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly. This decision significantly strengthens Wike’s hold on the legislature while weakening Fubara’s ability to govern effectively.
THE IMPEACHMENT threat and Its consequences. The possibility of impeachment looms large. Should it succeed, a pro-Wike deputy governor could be installed as the new leader, further consolidating Wike’s grip on the state. However, such a move could trigger: mass protests and public backlash – many Rivers citizens may view it as a political coup, fueling unrest. Legal battles and instability – the impeachment process could lead to prolonged court disputes, affecting governance. Political shifts and PDP Divisions – a deepening rift in the PDP could weaken the party, allowing the APC to capitalize on the crisis.
WITHIN THE future of Rivers State, lies the question: who blinks first? With neither Fubara nor Wike willing to back down, Rivers State faces an uncertain future. This battle resembles two warriors locked in a duel over a blade—eventually, one will drop it, but not without wounds. Wike is known for his high-handedness and political dominance, while Fubara has proven to be headstrong and defiant. Who will emerge victorious? Who will douse the raging political fire?
ONLY TIME will tell.
