There was widespread jubilation across Oyo State on Friday as all the pupils and teachers abducted during the May 15 attack in Oriire Local Government Area regained their freedom after spending about 56 days in captivity.

The victims were kidnapped by heavily armed assailants while travelling through the Ahoro–Esiele axis of Oriire Local Government Area in an incident that triggered widespread outrage and heightened security concerns across the state.

Their rescue marks the end of weeks of uncertainty and anxiety for their families, residents, and the people of Oyo State following one of the most disturbing mass abductions recorded in the state in recent years.

The abduction drew strong condemnation from across the country and prompted an intensified security response involving multiple security agencies. Authorities launched coordinated search-and-rescue operations aimed at securing the victims’ release and dismantling criminal hideouts within the affected areas.

As part of measures to facilitate the rescue operation and improve security, the Oyo State Government imposed a curfew in several local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park, an area believed to have become a refuge for armed criminal groups.

The incident also attracted national attention, prompting the Federal Government to deploy additional security personnel to the area and approve the recruitment of forest guards to strengthen surveillance and security in vulnerable forest communities.

During the victims’ prolonged captivity, academic activities were severely disrupted. The development sparked protests by concerned stakeholders and industrial action by teachers’ unions, while community leaders, parents, and residents continued to appeal for the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.

With the successful rescue of all the victims, attention is now expected to shift to their medical examination, psychological rehabilitation, and reunification with their families after nearly two months in captivity.

As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to disclose the full details of the rescue operation, including whether any of the kidnappers were arrested or neutralised during the mission. Officials are expected to issue a comprehensive statement as investigations continue.
