Today, I join millions of admirers, friends, colleagues and lovers of good music across Nigeria and the world to celebrate an extraordinary icon, a father figure, a friend of many years standing, an internationally acclaimed composer, singer, great performer and undisputed Juju music warlord—King Sunday Adeniyi Ìsola Adegeye, MFR, popularly known as King Sunny Ade (KSA), as he clocks 80 remarkable years.
KSA is not merely a musician; he is an institution, a living encyclopedia of Yoruba musical heritage and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished ambassadors of African music to the world. His music has crossed borders, generations and cultures, earning him international acclaim and securing his place in the history of world music.
Beyond the music, however, is the man I personally know, cherish and celebrate. To me, KSA is much more than an internationally celebrated superstar. He is a father figure, a friend of many years standing and a man whose love, affection and kindness towards me cannot be measured in monetary terms.
One of the most treasured memories of my relationship with this great icon remains his extraordinary gesture in 2019, when he personally honoured me at Havilla Event Centre, Ogbomoso, Oyo State during the launching of two of my classical Yoruba books. Despite his stature and demanding status as one of Africa’s greatest musical exports, KSA came to the event and performed for me free of charge.
That unforgettable occasion was graced by an array of distinguished personalities from all walks of life. The late His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, CFR, LLD, the revered Alaafin of Oyo, served as the Royal Father of the occasion. Also present was the renowned legal juggernaut, Lawyer Ayoola Ajayi of Kìkì-Òfin fame, alongside Alhaji Rasak Gbadegesin Kareem, former Deputy Chief of Staff in Oyo State, numerous royal fathers and several other eminent personalities, traditional leaders, professionals, academics, cultural enthusiasts and dignitaries.
Against that distinguished gathering, KSA’s performance became one of the unforgettable highlights of the occasion. He did not come merely as a celebrated entertainer; he came as a friend and father figure to honour me personally. That priceless gesture remains permanently etched in my heart.
For an artist of his monumental stature, performing without charge at my book launch was far beyond entertainment. It was an exceptional demonstration of friendship, love, humility, respect and genuine human connection—a gesture I shall forever cherish.
Whenever King Sunny Ade mounts the stage, he does not simply perform—he electrifies the atmosphere. His commanding stage presence, remarkable musicianship, creativity, vocal dexterity, mastery of the guitar and deep understanding of Juju music have made him a performer whose influence extends far beyond Nigeria.
At 80, therefore, I celebrate not only the global legend that millions know, but also the humble, generous, affectionate and compassionate man whom I have been privileged to know personally.
