The ancient town of Ora in Kwara State came alive with jubilation and colourful celebrations on Sunday as the new Olora of Ora, Oba Rodman Aremu Olawale Yekeen Sakonbari I, was formally installed and presented with the revered beaded crown by the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I.

The historic event attracted thousands of indigenes, residents, traditional rulers and dignitaries from across Yorubaland, transforming the community into a carnival-like atmosphere. Major streets were filled with well-wishers who trooped out in large numbers to witness the coronation and celebrate the ascension of their new monarch.
Commercial activities were largely suspended as shops, markets and government offices remained closed, with traders, workers and residents converging on the coronation venue to be part of what many described as a memorable chapter in the history of Ora.
The Alaafin arrived in a grand convoy accompanied by members of the Oyo Traditional Council (Oyomesi), prominent traditional rulers from Igbominaland and other royal fathers. He was warmly received by enthusiastic residents who praised his personal attendance and participation in the installation ceremony.
Speaking during the event, Oba Owoade underscored the cultural and spiritual significance of the beaded crown, describing it as one of the most revered symbols of Yoruba kingship.
“The beaded crown remains the most coveted emblem of Yoruba royalty. It is sacred, anointed and should be worn with dignity and restraint in a manner that reflects the finest values of Yoruba culture and tradition,” he said.
The Alaafin noted that the crown symbolizes ancestral authority, moral leadership and the enduring heritage of the Yoruba people. He stressed that traditional institutions remain vital instruments for fostering peace, unity and development in contemporary society.
According to him, Yoruba monarchs continue to enjoy immense respect and influence among their people, making them strategic partners in promoting government policies and mobilising grassroots support for developmental initiatives.
“A Yoruba Oba embodies the identity, history and cultural heritage of his people. This respected position can be effectively harnessed to strengthen democratic governance and accelerate community development,” the monarch stated.
He urged the people of Ora to support their new ruler and prayed for divine wisdom, guidance and success in his reign.
In his response, the newly installed Olora of Ora, Oba Rodman Aremu Olawale Yekeen Sakonbari I, pledged to devote himself wholeheartedly to the service of his people. He promised to deploy his experience, integrity, network and God-given talents towards the growth, peace and development of Ora Kingdom.
The monarch also expressed profound gratitude to the Alaafin for personally attending the ceremony and performing the installation rites, describing the gesture as a great honour for the people of Ora.
The colourful ceremony further highlighted the enduring historical and cultural ties between Ora and the Oyo Kingdom, reinforcing the shared heritage that continues to bind Yoruba communities across generations.
