Nigeria’s vast forest reserves were established to serve as valuable national assets for conservation, environmental protection, tourism, agriculture, and economic development. Today, however, many of these forests have become notorious hideouts for terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements who exploit the dense vegetation to unleash violence on innocent citizens.

Over the years, allegations have persisted that some desperate politicians imported foreign mercenaries from neighbouring countries during election periods to intimidate opponents and secure political victories. While many of these claims remain subjects of public debate, the devastating security challenges confronting the nation have fuelled concerns about the long-term consequences of empowering armed groups for political gain. Whatever their origin, these criminal networks have since evolved into independent terrorist organisations that now threaten the very society that once tolerated or allegedly enabled them.

The consequences have been catastrophic. Communities across the country now live under constant fear of attacks, kidnappings and killings. Thousands of Nigerians have lost their lives, while countless families have been displaced from their ancestral homes. Farmers can no longer safely cultivate their lands, worsening food insecurity and economic hardship.

The transformation of government forest reserves into operational bases for terrorists has also contributed to the disturbing rise in mass abductions of schoolchildren and other vulnerable citizens. Nigeria has witnessed several heartbreaking incidents, including the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls in Borno State, the kidnapping of students in Niger State, the abduction of pupils, teachers and a school principal in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, as well as numerous similar attacks across different parts of the country. These incidents have left lasting emotional scars on victims, families and entire communities.

History has consistently shown that political ambition pursued without regard for human life carries grave consequences. Those who knowingly encourage violence or empower criminal elements for personal or political advantage must recognise that their actions leave enduring scars on society. The blood of innocent victims continues to remind the nation of the heavy price paid for insecurity and lawlessness.

Nigeria’s forests should be centres of economic prosperity, environmental conservation and tourism—not sanctuaries for terrorists. Allowing criminal groups to dominate these reserves undermines national security, discourages investment and threatens the country’s future.

The Federal Government and state governments must therefore adopt a comprehensive security strategy to reclaim every inch of Nigeria’s forest reserves. Security agencies should intensify coordinated military operations, strengthen intelligence gathering, deploy modern surveillance technology and establish permanent security presence in vulnerable forests. Border security must also be significantly strengthened to curb illegal migration, arms trafficking and the infiltration of criminal elements.

Furthermore, governments at all levels must ensure that anyone found sponsoring, harbouring or financing terrorism faces the full weight of the law, regardless of political status or influence. Lasting peace can only be achieved when impunity is replaced with justice and accountability.

Every generation is remembered for the choices it makes. Likewise, every political leader leaves behind a legacy—either one of honour or one of regret. The question before today’s leaders is simple: what story will history tell about them? Will they be remembered as statesmen who confronted insecurity with courage, or as leaders whose actions or inaction allowed terrorism to flourish?

The time for decisive action is now. Nigeria must reclaim its forests, secure its borders and restore public confidence in the nation’s ability to protect lives and property. The country’s future depends on it.
