The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum to end the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) or face a nationwide industrial action.

This resolution was reached on Monday after a closed-door meeting held at the Labour House in Abuja, attended by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, representatives of ASUU, and leaders of other unions in the education sector.
NLC Warns of Nationwide Shutdown
Speaking after the meeting, Ajaero reaffirmed the NLC’s commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and ensuring the restoration of normal academic activities in public universities.
He noted that although discussions with the government had resumed, past negotiations often ended without tangible results.
“We have decided to give the Federal Government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector,” Ajaero said. “They have started talks with ASUU, but the challenges in this sector extend beyond ASUU.”
He further warned that failure to meet the ultimatum would prompt decisive action.
“If after four weeks this negotiation is not concluded, the organs of the NEC will meet and take a nationwide action involving all workers and unions in the country,” he declared.
‘No Pay, No Work’
Ajaero condemned the government’s no-work-no-pay policy against striking lecturers, describing it as punitive and counterproductive.
“The so-called policy of ‘no work, no pay’ will henceforth be ‘no pay, no work.’ You cannot benefit from an action you instigated,” he stated.
He stressed that most strike actions in Nigeria were triggered by the government’s failure to honour agreements, adding that the NLC would no longer tolerate such repeated breaches of negotiated terms.
ASUU’s Longstanding Demands
ASUU’s major demands include the full implementation of the 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries and arrears, sustainable university funding, protection from victimisation, and the release of withheld union deductions.

Also present at Monday’s meeting were leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP). All expressed solidarity with ASUU’s cause and pledged to support any collective action deemed necessary.
