Preparedness and proper timing, not magic or shortcuts, are the secrets behind the success of prolific farmers. This was the assertion made this evening by Professor Ezekiel Ayinde, a senior lecturer and expert in Agricultural Production Economícs at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso.
Speaking during a live radio programme Tiwantiwa, sponsored by the Ogbomoso First Group and monitored on Ajilete FM 92.1 in Gambari, near Ogbomoso, Professor Ayinde emphasized that following the right timelines is crucial in farming.
He explained that timely execution of activities such as planting, fertilisation, and harvesting ensures maximum yield and crop quality. “Delay in farm operations can lead to poor germination, pest infestations, and low productivity,” he warned.
In response to a question on how appropriate farming techniques impact productivity, the university don stated that practices such as choosing the right seed varieties, adopting proper irrigation methods, and maintaining adequate crop spacing can significantly improve soil health, boost yields, and reduce waste.
Addressing the risks of ignoring the farming calendar, Professor Ayinde noted that poor timing often results in drought stress, pest outbreaks, and market glut — a situation where crops are harvested too early or too late, leading to losses from spoilage or low market prices.
He also stressed the importance of adapting to unpredictable weather patterns. “Farmers must be more vigilant and plan their planting and harvesting schedules to avoid extreme conditions that could damage crops,” he said.
Highlighting the role of technology in modern agriculture, he mentioned weather forecasting, smart irrigation systems, and mechanized farming as essential tools that help farmers make informed decisions and reduce guesswork.
Professor Ayinde concluded by saying that adherence to timely farming practices enhances food security, as proper scheduling ensures steady food production, reduces shortages, and stabilizes prices. He advised farmers to follow agricultural calendars, seek expert guidance, adopt modern tools, and stay informed about weather patterns.
“No farmer who follows professional advice and instructions will ever regret venturing into farming,” he assured.
