The delay in fulfilling promises made by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the Super Falcons has generated widespread concerns and disappointment among Nigerians, particularly football enthusiasts.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, had pledged cash rewards and other incentives to the team after their historic victory at the recently concluded Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Rabat, Morocco. The Nigerian Super Falcons defeated host nation Morocco 3–2 at the Olympic Stadium, securing the continental trophy for a record 10th time.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is Africa’s premier women’s football competition, aimed at promoting the sport, uniting African nations through sportsmanship, and showcasing talent for global recognition.
Following their triumph, the Super Falcons, led by Head Coach Justina Madugu, visited President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to present the trophy and appreciate his support during the tournament. At the reception, the President promised each player a monetary reward of $100,000, alongside other incentives, as recognition for their contribution to the nation’s sporting achievements.
Weeks after the pledge, however, the players and fans alike are expressing growing frustration at the government’s delay in fulfilling its commitment. Many argue that such inaction not only dampens morale among the victorious team but also raises questions about the credibility of government promises.
Observers warn that the inability of the Federal Government to honor its word could discourage athletes who dedicate themselves to representing the country on international stages. “Rewarding the Super Falcons as promised would not only justify the confidence reposed in the government but also serve as motivation for upcoming talents to remain committed to national service,” a sports analyst remarked.
Failure to act swiftly, critics say, risks sending the wrong message to Nigerian youths and undermines the sacrifices made by those who continue to bring pride and global recognition to the nation.
