With preparations in full swing for the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, a group known as the Diaspora Initiative for Alaafin Coronation has called on security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure the protection of lives and property within the Oyo Federal Constituency.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over a recent surge in kidnapping and other security threats in parts of Oyo State.

In a statement jointly signed by its coordinator, Dr. Ademola Adeleke, and spokesperson, Prince Lashley Ladigbolu, the group urged the Oyo State government, the Nigeria Police Force, Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), and the Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gani Adams, to strengthen security measures across the state, particularly at the coronation venue.

Additionally, the group appealed to the Chairman of the Coronation Security Subcommittee, AIG Deji Ogundele (rtd.), and the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor to coordinate efforts that will ensure a safe and incident-free event.

The coronation, scheduled to take place between March 31 and April 12, 2025, is expected to attract high-profile dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, marking a historic moment for the ancient city of Oyo. This will be the first coronation of an Alaafin in 54 years, following the enthronement of the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in 1971.

Emphasizing the significance of the occasion, the Diaspora Initiative for Alaafin Coronation described the event as a celebration of Yoruba heritage, unity, and cultural pride.

“The Alaafin coronation is not just a celebration of our heritage but also a beacon of unity, tradition, and pride for the Yoruba people at home and in the diaspora. We must ensure that our guests experience the warmth, hospitality, and security that Oyo is known for,” the statement read.

The group further stressed the need for a collective effort in safeguarding the historic moment, urging all security agencies to be proactive in ensuring a peaceful, well-organized, and grand coronation befitting the revered throne of Alaafin.
