Former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has finally confirmed that the late Chief Moshood Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

This revelation is documented in his autobiography, A Journey in Service, which was launched in Abuja on Thursday.

Speaking through the book reviewer, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Babangida stated that Abiola, who ran under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), not only secured the majority of votes but also met the constitutional geographical spread required to be declared president.

He described the annulment of the election as the most challenging decision of his life.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida said.

However, he expressed satisfaction that former President Muhammadu Buhari later acknowledged Abiola’s victory and posthumously conferred on him the nation’s highest honor, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), a title reserved for presidents.
