Ouagadougou – Burkina Faso has officially launched its first fully electric vehicle, marking a significant milestone in the country’s technological and industrial development. The vehicle, branded ITAOUA, is the brainchild of Burkinabe engineers and is produced by local automobile company, Itaou.
Designed and assembled in Ouaga 2000, a district in the capital city, the ITAOUA car runs entirely on electricity and solar power. It boasts an impressive range of 330 kilometers on a full charge, with a rapid charging time of just 30 minutes—placing it among the most efficient electric vehicles on the African market.
With the Electric Vehicle (EV) sector on the continent largely dominated by countries like South Africa, Morocco, and Kenya, Burkina Faso’s entry introduces a new and promising competitor. The environmentally friendly vehicle highlights the country’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable transportation solutions.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the launch of the ITAOUA brand is expected to significantly boost the local economy. The production facility is projected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate technological innovation and skills development within the country.
This historic development positions Burkina Faso as an emerging player in Africa’s rapidly growing EV industry.
