Peace and normalcy have returned to Ogbomoso and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) community after the circulation of an unfounded rumour about an attack by Fulani herders and the killing of two students, as falsely reported by Sahara Reporters. The report caused panic and anxiety within and outside the university, leaving parents of students deeply concerned for their children’s safety.

In a swift response, the university’s Public Relations Office debunked the Sahara Reporters’ unsubstantiated news through an official press release, clarifying that no such incident had occurred.

Yesterday, reporters from SCOOPCHASE conducted an investigation into the university’s security measures. They discovered that the Vice-Chancellor and the university management have before the falsely rumour of attack taken the security of lives and property very seriously. The university has overtime strengthened its security network by engaging the services of the Nigerian Police, Amotekun, the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), Vigilante groups, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Agro Rangers to patrol the campus and surrounding areas round the clock.

Several students interviewed by our reporters confirmed that they now sleep peacefully without fear of intimidation. They commended the Vice-Chancellor, Professor ROM Olátúndé Kalilu for his proactive approach in providing enhanced security surveillance, vigilance, and readiness to address potential threats. The students also urged the university management to maintain its commitment to securing lives and property, noting that such measures will further boost the university’s reputation and credibility on a global scale.

In addition to ensuring security within the campus, the university has extended its efforts to the surrounding community, offering protection to students living off-campus. However, our reporters observed that many off-campus hostels lack adequate security measures, exposing students to potential risks. SCOOPCHASE advises hostel owners to prioritize the security of their properties by providing fortified security systems to safeguard students and other tenants. This step will contribute to creating a safe environment for both the students and the university community at large.
