Nigerian Business Titan Alhaji Aminu Dantata Passes Away at 94

Nigeria has lost one of its most illustrious business magnates and elder statesmen. Alhaji Aminu Dantata, a pillar of commerce and philanthropy, passed away in the early hours of Friday, June 27, 2025, at 3:00 a.m. in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He was 94.

In a statement issued by the Dantata family, the loss was described as deeply painful, as prayers were offered for his eternal rest.

“Innalillahi Wa’inna Ilaihi Raji’un… May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus, and give his family, the people of Kano, and the entire nation the fortitude to bear this great loss,” the family said.

Alhaji Dantata’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy remains firmly etched in Nigeria’s economic and philanthropic history.

A Legacy of Influence and Impact

Born in Kano, Alhaji Aminu Dantata was a direct descendant of the legendary West African merchant Alhassan Dantata, and the great-grandfather of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. He belonged to a lineage synonymous with enterprise, vision, and generosity.

Dantata began his education at Dala Primary School from 1938 to 1945 and later pursued private studies under a school established by his father in 1949. He would go on to embody the entrepreneurial spirit that defined his family’s legacy.

His career in public service was highlighted by his role as Kano State Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, and Industry between 1968 and 1973 during the administration of Governor Audu Bako. His initiatives during that period were instrumental in catalyzing Kano’s industrial and commercial growth.

Champion of Education and National Development

Beyond business and governance, Dantata was a staunch advocate of education. He served as the pioneer Chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Katsina, where he championed the cause of academic excellence and youth empowerment.

His business empire spanned several sectors including construction, agriculture, import and export, and manufacturing. He remained a central figure in Nigerian commerce for decades, contributing to national development through enterprise and job creation

National Mourning for a Statesman

As condolences pour in from across Nigeria and beyond, Alhaji Aminu Dantata will be remembered not only for his business acumen but also for his enduring commitment to humanitarian causes. From educational scholarships to healthcare support and community development, his impact on the lives of countless Nigerians is immeasurable.
