Fear and frustration have gripped the Bokungi community near Gbale in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State following a bandit attack that claimed the life of a local vigilante and led to the abduction of several residents.
The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, June 25, when heavily armed assailants stormed the village, opening fire indiscriminately and throwing the community into chaos. A courageous member of the community’s vigilante group lost his life while attempting to repel the attackers and protect residents.
Although the exact number of abducted persons remains unclear as of the time of this report, sources within the community confirmed that multiple residents were taken away by the gunmen. The attack has left many families in shock, mourning, and fear for the safety of their loved ones.
This latest assault comes less than 24 hours after a similar attack in Lile village, Patigi Local Government Area, where suspected bandits gruesomely murdered a prominent PDP chieftain and his son.
The surge in attacks, particularly across northern and southern parts of Kwara State, has raised alarm among residents and security stakeholders. Communities continue to reel from the spate of violence that has left many dead and scores kidnapped in recent weeks.
Local authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, while calls for urgent government intervention grow louder among affected communities.
