Key delegates and stakeholders from the South West geopolitical zone are expected to converge in Lagos this week for a high-level strategic meeting ahead of the upcoming National Political Summit on Nigeria’s constitutional future. The meeting aims to articulate and harmonise the position of the Yoruba people on key national issues.

The Lagos gathering, organised by the South West Patriot Advocacy and Mobilisation Committee, is part of a broader series of regional consultations leading up to the National Political Summit convened by The Patriots, a coalition of eminent Nigerians led by former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku.

The summit, scheduled to hold in Abuja this June, is expected to address major issues surrounding the call for a new constitution in Nigeria. It will bring together stakeholders from across the country to push for a truly people-driven framework that ensures equity, justice, and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

The National Coordination Committee for the summit is co-chaired by Senators Gbenga Daniel (Ogun State) and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto State), with other distinguished members including Kayode Fayemi, Labaran Maku, Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, Pauline Tallen, Boni Haruna, Donald Duke, Ben Obi, Shehu Sani, Daisy Danjuma, Aisha Ismail, Josephine Anenih, Shekari Charity, Christie Anyanwu, and Ankio Briggs.

Chairman of the South West committee, Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, confirmed that preparations for the regional meeting are in full gear. He noted that the forum will address key concerns such as restructuring, true federalism, devolution of powers, security, regional autonomy, political representation, inclusion, and the preservation of cultural and linguistic identity.

Prof. Anthony Kila, National Chairman of the Patriot Strategy, Advocacy and Mobilisation Committee, described the Lagos meeting as a vital step toward ensuring that the Yoruba voice is coherent, united, and influential at the national summit.

“This meeting is crucial for mobilising a unified regional position. We aim to contribute meaningfully to a constitution that truly reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians,” Prof. Kila stated.

The upcoming National Political Summit is expected to serve as a platform for consensus-building among Nigeria’s diverse regions and interests, with the goal of creating a sustainable and inclusive constitutional order for the nation.
