United States President Donald Trump has said that U.S. forces carried out airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) fighters in northwestern Nigeria, warning that further attacks would follow if the group continues to kill civilians, particularly Christians.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, Trump claimed the strikes were ordered under his authority and described them as “powerful and deadly.” He alleged that the militants had been responsible for widespread killings in the region and said the attacks were intended to halt further violence.

Trump added that U.S. military authorities carried out what he described as “numerous perfect strikes,” and reiterated his stance that the United States would not allow extremist groups to thrive. He also warned that additional strikes would be launched if the killings continued.

Following Trump’s comments, the Federal Government of Nigeria confirmed that security and intelligence cooperation is ongoing between Nigeria and the United States, including collaboration that has resulted in airstrikes against terrorist targets in the country’s North West.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signed by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, said Nigeria remains engaged in “structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America,” to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

According to the ministry, the cooperation involves intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other forms of support conducted in line with international law, with respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and shared security commitments.

The statement emphasized that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts prioritize the protection of civilian lives, the preservation of national unity, and the safeguarding of the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity.

It further noted that terrorist violence, whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains contrary to Nigeria’s values and poses a threat to international peace and security.
