The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train operations on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor following Sunday’s derailment incident.
The Managing Director of NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that services will remain suspended until investigations are concluded and safety is guaranteed.
According to him, technical teams from the NRC, officials of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and other relevant agencies are already on-site to ascertain the cause of the derailment and recommend preventive measures.
Opeifa dismissed speculations that the trains were poorly maintained, stressing that the corporation has consistently adhered to global safety standards. He also disclosed that refunds had been processed for all affected passengers.
The NRC boss further revealed that six passengers sustained minor injuries and have since received medical treatment. He added that the actual number of passengers on board at the time of the incident was still being verified.
Meanwhile, the NSIB has formally launched an investigation into the derailment as authorities work to restore safe and efficient rail services along the Abuja-Kaduna route.
