The tragic incident that occurred on June 13, 2025, in Yelewata Village, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, North-Central Nigeria, though now in the past, still haunts the memory of Nigerians—particularly the people of Benue State, many of whom lost loved ones to the senseless violence.

In a heterogeneous nation like Nigeria, disputes are, to some extent, inevitable. However, our diversity should never be a reason for disintegration or bloodshed. Rather, it should be viewed as a collective strength—an asset that must be protected. As such, we must refrain from inflammatory remarks and actions that could throw the country into chaos. It is imperative that differences be resolved amicably and proactively before they escalate into full-blown crises.
Ethnic-based attacks offer no lasting solution to grievances; instead, they stain our national image and undermine the peace and unity we claim to uphold. If we truly desire to be a nation admired by others, we must prioritize the national interest over personal or ethnic sentiments. We must avoid any incendiary rhetoric or conduct that threatens the fabric of our coexistence and take urgent steps to address issues that could lead to the loss of lives and property.
Citizens also have a crucial role to play in safeguarding peace. Every Nigerian must commit to making our society safe and habitable. One patriotic way to contribute is by reporting suspicious activities promptly so that necessary actions can be taken before harm is done.
On its part, the government must remain committed to addressing the root causes of insecurity. Providing employment opportunities and empowering the youth are fundamental steps toward building a peaceful and prosperous society. Youth empowerment not only helps reduce crime but also serves as a preventive mechanism against future security threats.
Finally, while it is important to apprehend criminal elements, the government must go beyond arrests. It must justify the trust placed in it by ensuring that perpetrators of violence are brought to justice swiftly and transparently. Only then can citizens feel safe, respected, and confident in the leadership of the state.
