The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reinstated Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary—a significant development in the party’s ongoing internal restructuring.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, during a press briefing held at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja. He was flanked by influential party figures, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other key stakeholders.
Ambassador Damagum acknowledged that the decision to reinstate Senator Anyanwu, a close ally of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, was a “difficult but necessary step” toward ensuring unity within the party.
“This was a critical decision,” Damagum stated. “Anyanwu is resuming as the National Secretary. As INEC rightly pointed out, they have not received our official notice, so what we will hold on June 30th is an expanded caucus meeting.”
He further clarified that the previously planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting had been canceled, and that the party would instead convene a broader caucus session.
“At the next caucus meeting, we will take a decision that will lead to a properly constituted NEC,” he added.
The reinstatement follows a high-level consultative meeting held on Tuesday between PDP leadership and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu. The dialogue aimed to resolve procedural challenges surrounding the party’s internal processes and the scheduling of its NEC gathering.
