In a bold and strategic move to enhance security and development across Oyo State, the state government has approved the procurement of two state-of-the-art surveillance aircraft and greenlit multiple infrastructural projects valued at over ₦126 billion.

The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, following the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Ibadan.

According to Oyelade, the state will acquire two DA 42 MNG light aircraft equipped with cutting-edge Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) technology. These aircraft, capable of operating at both high and low altitudes, will support efforts to combat banditry, illegal mining, and other criminal activities, particularly in the state’s expansive rural hinterlands.

He explained that the aircraft were chosen over helicopters due to their lower maintenance costs, availability of spare parts, and compatibility with the existing fleet operated by the Nigerian Air Force, which will allow for smoother operational synergy. The two aircraft are expected to cost the state ₦7.76 billion.

“Although Oyo enjoys relative peace compared to several other states, the government remains committed to confronting the persistent threats of kidnapping and banditry,” Oyelade stated.

He further highlighted Oyo State’s unique security challenges, noting its vast landmass of 28,454 square kilometres—making it the largest state in southern Nigeria and larger than 10 African countries. This, he said, necessitated a more robust and technology-driven surveillance mechanism.

The aircraft are expected to significantly enhance the capacity of the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies to detect and neutralize criminal elements in hard-to-reach areas.

The Commissioner also revealed that Oyo State’s Amotekun Corps leads the South West in terms of personnel strength (2,500 operatives), operational vehicles (181), and motorcycles (450). It also pays the highest wages in the region, with the lowest-paid officer earning ₦116,000 monthly.

In addition to the security investment, the State Executive Council approved several major infrastructural projects, including:

Construction of interchanges and bridges as part of the 110km Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road project at a cost of ₦83.03 billion, with 72km targeted for completion by 2027.

Asphaltic reconstruction and expansion of major roads including Secretariat Road, Trans Amusement–UI–Sango Road, and Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Road, valued at ₦36.35 billion.

Rehabilitation of the Mobil–Oluyole Industrial Estate Road network, budgeted at ₦6.80 billion.

Direct government intervention in the Light-Up Oyo Solar Project, with an initial ₦595 million and a monthly maintenance cost of ₦190 million to ensure continuous street lighting across the state.

The state government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to securing the lives and property of residents while driving infrastructural development in line with Governor ‘Seyi Makinde’s broader vision to stimulate economic growth, ensure social stability, and make Oyo State a hub of innovation and progress.
