No fewer than 800 federal civil servants are set to retire within the next two years, prompting the government to initiate specialized training to prepare them for life after service.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this at the 2nd Executive Prospective Retirees Conference (EPRC 2025), where she emphasized the importance of early preparation for retirement.

According to Walson-Jack, the initiative aligns with Pillar Six of the Federal Civil Service Strategic Implementation Plan (FCSSIP 25), which focuses on “Enhanced Value Proposition for Civil Servants”—a key aspect of staff welfare.

> “This initiative underscores our commitment to the welfare of civil servants by ensuring that you are not only supported during your service but are also well-prepared for a seamless transition into retirement,” she stated.

She highlighted that retirement should not be seen as the end of one’s career but rather as a new phase filled with opportunities. She urged retirees to make informed decisions, develop financial literacy, and take a proactive approach toward their future.

Comprehensive Pre-Retirement Training

The Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, through the Service Welfare Office, has introduced several pre-retirement programs to ensure a smooth transition for retiring officers. These include:

Health & Wellness Strategies: Encouraging retirees to maintain strong social networks, stay active, and engage in community service for a fulfilling life after service.

> “Retirement is not the end but a new beginning. Whether through entrepreneurship, consultancy, or volunteering, there is a vast landscape of possibilities waiting for you,” Walson-Jack added.

Government Support for Retirees

She reassured retirees that the government remains committed to their well-being, introducing initiatives such as:

Affordable housing schemes

Comprehensive health insurance plans

Cooperative societies for financial support

She also commended Mr. James Abiona, the lead facilitator of the training, for his expertise and contribution to the success of the conference. The training program was organized in collaboration with JFK Abiona Consultancy Ltd.
