The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Olusola Alao, has asserted that the revered stool of the Alaafin of Oyo remains sacrosanct and cannot be taken for granted by anyone.

Oba Alao made this declaration on Monday while receiving the newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, who paid him a historic courtesy visit at his palace in Orile-Igbon, located in the Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.

During the warm reception, the Olugbon emphasised the age-long historical, traditional, and cultural significance of the Alaafin’s stool, which he described as a symbol of unity and identity across the entire Yorubaland.

“Our history is an indelible part of our lives,” Oba Alao said. “The Alaafin of Oyo is not just a title within Oyo State—it is a revered institution across Yorubaland. Even the state government recognises this, as Governor Seyi Makinde reaffirmed during the coronation ceremony.”

Quoting the governor, the Olugbon noted that the Alaafin’s throne “transcends the boundaries of Oyo State” and carries the legacy of the Oyo Empire. “It is not a stool anyone can afford to treat with levity. It is part of our cultural heritage and pride.”

The Olugbon also revealed that the Oyo State Government is making efforts to reactivate the Council of Obas and Chiefs, which has been dormant for years.

“I trust Governor Makinde’s vision. We’ve discussed the matter privately. He wants the Council of Obas to be fully active again. Though there have been a few challenges, I believe the Council will resume before his tenure ends,” he said.

Expressing joy over the visit, Oba Alao described it as symbolic and historic, noting that it was the Alaafin’s first official visit to any palace since his ascension.

“I am truly grateful to Oba Owoade for choosing to visit the Olugbon Palace first. Our relationship goes back over 700 years, tracing our roots to Oyo Ile. We are both direct descendants of Oduduwa, alongside Aresa and Onikoyi. This bond is ancient, and I do not take it for granted,” he added.

In his remarks, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, said the visit was to express his appreciation to the Olugbon and the Surulere Traditional Council for their support since his emergence.

“Olugbon is a good and honourable man. He was the first to congratulate me when my name was announced. He also attended my coronation,” Oba Owoade stated. “We are here to thank him and reaffirm our bond. Orile-Igbon will continue to prosper under his reign.”

The Alaafin was accompanied by his wife, Olori Abiwumi Owoade, as well as prominent traditional rulers including the Sabiganna of Iganna, Oba Saliu Oyemonla Azeez; Olokaka of Okaka, Oba AbdulAzeez Ayoola; Ajoriwin of Irawo, Oba Musiliudeen Olalere; Eleyinpo of Ipapo, Oba Yekeen Adidas; Iba Saamu of Oyo, High Chief Lamidi Oyewale; and the Agbaakin of Oyo, Asimiyu Atanda, among others.
