The persistent wave of banditry and kidnapping across Nigeria—particularly in the North-East, North-Central and parts of the South-West—has continued to generate widespread concern among citizens at home and in the diaspora, as lives and property are increasingly threatened by criminal activities.

Recent attacks by suspected bandits and armed groups have resulted in tragic loss of lives across several states. One of such incidents was the gruesome killing of a traditional ruler, Oba Kehinde Jacob Falodun, who was murdered by suspected bandits on February 18, 2026. The monarch, the Alagama of Agama Community in Akure North Local Government Area, was reportedly attacked and killed in circumstances that shocked residents and the wider Yoruba community.

Similarly, on February 3, 2026, about 162 people were reportedly killed during violent attacks on Wuro and Nuku villages in Kaiama Local Government Area. The violence continued the following day, February 4, when at least 40 people were killed in another rural community attack, with several Nigerian Army personnel among the casualties.

In another incident on March 6, 2026, suspected bandits attacked Eruku Community, burning vehicles and attempting to carry out kidnappings before being resisted by local hunters. The attack left the community in fear and heightened security concerns in the area.

Residents of Katsina State also experienced a terrifying assault when gunmen reportedly moved from house to house shooting residents, leaving behind a trail of casualties and destruction. The incident created a grim atmosphere in the state, with many describing the aftermath as deeply disturbing.

Further violence was recorded on March 5, 2026, when gunmen attacked Tyungu Jam and Mbaav communities in Kwande Local Government Area, killing at least 20 people and abducting 10 others. In a related development, another coordinated attack across several farming communities in the state reportedly claimed the lives of 22 people belonging to a particular faith group.

Earlier in the year, on January 22, 2026, armed attackers targeted miners in Kuru Community in Jos South Local Government Area. The incident further highlighted the severity of insecurity confronting the country and raised questions about the safety of rural communities and economic workers.

Security analysts note that while insecurity remains a global challenge affecting many nations, the effectiveness of government strategies and security frameworks often determines how successfully such threats are contained.

Despite these challenges, Nigeria’s security personnel have continued to demonstrate commitment and resilience in combating banditry, insurgency and other forms of criminality. Through coordinated operations and daily engagements with armed groups, security agencies have recorded notable successes in several regions.

Members of the armed forces and other security services have consistently displayed dedication and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, working tirelessly to safeguard the lives and property of Nigerians whenever security threats arise.

Observers maintain that strengthening intelligence gathering, improving community collaboration and sustaining government support for security agencies remain critical steps toward addressing the country’s security challenges.
