Supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Thursday thronged the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, expecting his formal return following the lifting of the six-month emergency rule — but left disappointed as the governor failed to appear.

Crowds gathered from the early hours, with women’s groups, sacked local government chairmen, pro-Fubara lawmakers, and music bands turning the atmosphere into a carnival. By mid-afternoon, however, Fubara — who was reportedly in Abuja — had not shown up, leaving many frustrated.

Sources linked his absence to behind-the-scenes disputes over key appointments. Former governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was alleged to be lobbying for nominees for strategic positions, including the Secretary to the State Government and commissioners. Wike, in an interview on Channels TV, denied the claims, saying:

“I cannot impose anything on the governor. I have no candidate and I will not.”

Controversy also trailed the actions of outgoing Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), who, shortly before handing over on Wednesday, announced the appointment of Dr. George Nwaeke as Head of Service. The late-night decision has sparked debate over its legitimacy.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly, which resumed sitting for the first time since the emergency rule, urged Governor Fubara to submit the list of commissioner nominees and the 2025 budget estimates, pledging full cooperation to ensure stability in the state.

In a separate appeal, the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, led by former Governor Rufus Ada-George, called for unity and forgiveness, warning that lingering political rancour could stall the state’s development.

President Bola Tinubu, who lifted the emergency rule on Wednesday, has been commended by stakeholders for restoring democratic governance in the oil-rich state.
