The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has reportedly been flown abroad for urgent medical attention following a serious but undisclosed ailment.
A top government source confirmed to ScoopChase Reporters on Sunday that the minister’s condition is “very serious,” though he is currently receiving intensive medical care overseas.
“It’s very serious. He may survive, but he can’t get back to work again,” the source disclosed.
The source also revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commenced discreet consultations to identify a possible replacement for Edun, given the gravity of his health situation. “President Bola Tinubu is looking for a replacement urgently,” the insider added, noting the growing concern within government circles amid Nigeria’s current economic and foreign exchange challenges.
According to the report, Edun’s deteriorating health may be connected to extreme exhaustion and work-related stress arising from his demanding schedule and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Senior government officials, it was noted, often work with little rest, irregular meals, and minimal sleep — sometimes staying up late into the night and resuming work after only a few hours.
Meanwhile, the Presidency on Sunday confirmed that Mr. Edun is “indisposed.” In his stead, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., which commence on Monday, October 13.
A statement signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, explained that:
“Cardoso, as the Alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who is indisposed.”
Mr. Edun, a key figure in President Tinubu’s economic management team, has been at the forefront of Nigeria’s fiscal and monetary policy reforms since assuming office in 2023.
