An Editorial Call for Restraint, Enforcement and Greater Respect for Human Life

Road safety should never become a matter of convenience. Every journey begins with the hope of reaching a destination safely, yet families, relatives and friends in Ogbomoso have continued to experience the pain and trauma that follow road crashes involving motorcycles and other vehicles.
The recurring incidents on some major roads in the city, including Owode Road, Takie Road and Seminary Road, deserve urgent public attention. Reports from residents and eyewitnesses have repeatedly raised concerns about speeding, dangerous overtaking and impatience among some motorcycle riders. Where such behaviour brings a motorcycle dangerously close to heavy-duty vehicles, the consequences can be devastating.
For families who lose loved ones in road crashes, the incident does not end at the scene of the accident. It leaves behind grief, economic hardship, emotional trauma and, in some cases, permanent injuries that can affect victims and their dependants for the rest of their lives.
The recent death of Mr. Abraham, an Okada rider, in a road accident on a Sunday is another painful reminder of how suddenly a normal day can become a day of mourning for a family. Such incidents should not merely generate temporary public sympathy; they should compel the community and relevant authorities to examine what can be done to prevent similar tragedies.
It is important, however, not to place the entire responsibility on motorcycle riders. Truck and other heavy-vehicle drivers must equally exercise caution, maintain appropriate speeds and give vulnerable road users adequate consideration. Road safety is a shared responsibility.
Nevertheless, motorcycle riders face particular risks because of their exposure on the road. The Federal Road Safety Corps has identified speeding and dangerous or wrongful overtaking among behaviours that can contribute to crashes, while its road-safety materials also emphasize the importance of motorcycle safety and proper training.
This is therefore a moment for sober reflection among Okada riders in Ogbomoso. No passenger, fare or destination is worth risking a human life. A few minutes saved through reckless overtaking or excessive speed can result in decades of grief for an entire family.
The FRSC, the police, local authorities and other relevant agencies should strengthen enforcement, public enlightenment and monitoring of dangerous road behaviour. Riders who violate traffic regulations should be dealt with according to the law, while responsible riders should be encouraged to make safety their first priority. The existing regulatory framework already recognizes offences such as speed-limit violations, dangerous driving and wrongful overtaking.
There is also a need for sustained road-safety education involving motorcycle associations, transport unions, community leaders, religious organisations and residents.
Ogbomoso cannot afford to continue losing valuable lives to preventable road crashes. The message must be simple: slow down, obey traffic rules, avoid dangerous overtaking and respect every life on the road.
Every rider has a family waiting at home. Every passenger has people who love them. Every driver has a responsibility to ensure that the journey ends safely.
Human life must remain more valuable than speed.
