The Supreme Court of Nigeria has restored the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) under former Senate President, David Mark, marking a decisive resolution to the party’s protracted internal crisis.

In a ruling delivered on Thursday, the apex court set aside an earlier order that had directed parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum—a legal principle requiring a return to pre-dispute conditions—pending determination of the leadership tussle.

The judgment nullifies interim measures that effectively froze the party’s leadership structure and affirms the legitimacy of the David Mark-led executive. Legal analysts say the decision reflects the court’s reluctance to sustain prolonged uncertainty in the internal affairs of political parties, particularly where such disputes threaten organisational stability.

The ADC crisis had intensified in recent months, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership. The dispute triggered multiple legal battles and conflicting lower court rulings, ultimately necessitating intervention by the Supreme Court.

Sources close to the proceedings indicate that the court found merit in the appeal challenging the status quo order, ruling that it was improperly granted and had the effect of undermining the party’s recognised leadership without a full hearing of the substantive issues.

Reacting to the verdict, allies of Mark described it as a victory for internal democracy and the rule of law, expressing optimism that it would foster reconciliation and reposition the party ahead of future elections.

However, members of the opposing faction are reportedly reviewing the judgment, with consultations ongoing to determine their next course of action.

Political observers note that the ruling may have wider implications for Nigeria’s party politics, reinforcing judicial limits in intra-party disputes while highlighting the need for strict adherence to constitutional processes within political organisations.

With the court’s pronouncement, attention now turns to how the ADC leadership under David Mark will consolidate its authority and address lingering divisions within the party.
