The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91. His death was confirmed by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in a statement released late on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Born on May 10, 1934, into the royal Anikinaiya House in Imupa, Ijebu Ode, Oba Adetona ascended the throne as one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers. He died peacefully on Sunday.
Governor Abiodun, in a personally signed statement, expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s passing. He said:
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland.
Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has greatly influenced the development of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large.”
Oba Adetona’s reign was marked by dignity, vision, and a lifelong commitment to the unity and progress of his people.
