The Chairman of the Oyo State Project Performance and Monitoring Agency and Executive Assistant on Project Monitoring to the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Muftau Open Salawu, has been conferred with an Award of Excellence by the Faculty of Engineering, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo.

The award was presented on Friday during the induction ceremony of the third cohort of graduating engineering students into the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). The university recognized Engr. Open Salawu for his outstanding contributions as a role model in engineering entrepreneurship.

In his acceptance speech, the civil engineer and Babalaje of Ogbomoso Land expressed deep gratitude to the university for the recognition. He revealed that he had previously resolved to decline further awards but felt compelled to accept this particular honour due to the institution’s prestige and the significance of the occasion.

“This award comes at a time I had decided not to accept any further awards,” he said. “But because of where it is coming from, I had to accept it.”

To further motivate young engineers, Open Salawu announced an annual award of $100 for the overall best graduating student from the Faculty of Engineering. He also pledged half of that amount ($50) to the best graduating student from the Department of Civil Engineering.

Explaining the rationale behind the dollar-based award, he said:

“I chose the dollar equivalent because of the volatility in the naira exchange rate. If I promise ₦50,000 today, it may not hold the same value by next year. This initiative is meant to be sustainable and impactful annually.”

He charged the graduating students to embrace entrepreneurship and maintain discipline in their professional lives, stating that “engineers must be active participants in society.”

Engr. Open Salawu also commended the university management for the serene and conducive learning environment that the institution provides.

Other notable personalities who received awards at the event include: Sir Chief Theophilus Adebowale Omotosho, Chairman, Bond Chemical Industries Ltd. Engr. Olatubosun Adeonipekun Adesina, General Manager, Transmission Company of Nigeria. Hon. Busoye Ogunlade, Chairman, Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency, among others.

Engr. Open Salawu was accompanied by a delegation comprising: Mr. Abiodun Oluwaseun Laurel, Senior Special Assistant on Project to the Governor, Mrs. Olayinka Olaleye, Coordinating Director, Oyo State Project Performance and Monitoring Agency.
